family, and environmental factors. Temperament, emotional regulation difficulties, family interactions, inconsistent or harsh discipline, and other psychosocial factors may contribute to its development or persistence.

Course and Prognosis
The course of ODD varies between individuals. Some children may later develop Conduct Disorder or experience other emotional and behavioural difficulties, but this progression is not inevitable.
Early intervention, parental involvement, and appropriate psychological treatment can help children develop healthier strategies for managing emotions, frustration, and interpersonal conflict.

Treatment
Behavioural Interventions: Behavioural approaches can help children develop more adaptive behaviours, emotional regulation skills, and strategies for managing anger and frustration.
Parent and Family Interventions: Parent-management training and family-based approaches can help establish consistent boundaries, reinforce positive behaviours, and reduce patterns of conflict within the family.

Medication: Medication is not generally considered a primary treatment for ODD itself. It may be considered when clinically significant co-occurring conditions, such as ADHD, are present and require pharmacological treatment.

EGO Clinic

Book an appointment now!

         Contact

Externalizing disorders are characterized by behavioural difficulties that are expressed outwardly.
